Regional action

Regional action, reaching out to all audiences

The creation of the Centre Pompidou in 1977 marked a milestone in the development of museums opening to new audiences. In keeping with its initial mission, the Centre Pompidou seeks endlessly to broaden its audiences and thus share modern and contemporary art as widely as possible.
In addition to its presence through the Centre Pompidou Metz (2010), the Centre Pompidou Málaga (2015), the Kanal-Centre Pompidou in Brussels (May 2018), the West Bund art museum in Shanghai (2019) and its major international exhibitions, the Centre Pompidou also seeks to strengthen and perpetuate its action on a national level.

To mark its 40th anniversary in 2017, the Centre Pompidou organised sixty-five events throughout France, in collaboration with seventy-five local cultural players (museums, art centres, theatres and festivals, etc.). The Centre Pompidou decided to maintain this momentum and build lasting relations with cultural players located across France. The aim is to develop actions to attract audiences who do not have a direct access to culture.
The Centre Pompidou has thus engaged in a strengthened regional programme, notably via nomadic happenings created by artists, events, nomadic exhibitions and workshops for young audiences or the co-creation of new cultural venues.

In Ile-de-France

Centre Pompidou Francilien

Fabrique de l’Art / Musée national Picasso-Paris

The Centre Pompidou is building a new conservation and creation centre in the Ile-de-France region.

With 30,000m² of space and designed as a model for innovative arts institutions, it will be:

  • a centre of excellence for the conservation and restoration of the works in its collection;
  • a venue for cultural dissemination and creation strongly anchored in its territory.

The new venue will open in the summer of 2026 in Massy.

The prefiguration programme

In 2019, in the run-up to this project and in collaboration with local, cultural and academic players as well as schools and non-profit organisations, the Centre Pompidou launched a programme extending across the Ile-de-France region.
Its actions, such as the presentation of works from the collection, mediation work, the experimentation of new artistic techniques and the creation of research and training partnerships with the academic world, are occasions and opportunities to meet local audiences and build close ties with regional stakeholders.

Regional outreach

The roll-out of actions in Ile-de-France is accompanied by an equally important national presence. The Centre Pompidou is constantly exploring new forms of hybrid, innovative and durable partnerships with local authorities in search of new channels for dissemination and collaboration.

The Centre Pompidou-Metz

As the most visited modern & contemporary art centre in France, outside of the Paris region, the Centre Pompidou Metz is an outstanding example of this regional foothold. An opening to all audiences and the intersection of fields are at the heart of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, with projects designed for school-goers and more remote audiences, collaborations with activist organisations, with Metz hospital, or actions in rural areas of the region, in a blend of live performance and exhibitions.

mille formes, Clermont-Ferrand

The Centre Pompidou is working alongside the city of Clermont-Ferrand to create "mille formes", the first permanent art initiation centre for infants to 6-year-olds.

Inaugurated in December 2019, "mille formes" is designed to be an experimental space where young children can discover contemporary creation in all its facets. Children discover art through hands-on activities and interaction in a new environment.

Exchanging ideas, working together and observing artists at work are the activities which transform this venue into a new space to practise and explore, a space in which adults contribute as much as children. "mille formes" is also designed to be a venue for resources and the exploration of issues linked to art and early childhood, thus enabling professionals and parents to discuss these questions together.

Exhibitions beyond the walls

Collaborations with partners in French regions

The territorial action of the Centre Pompidou is also illustrated by an active policy of promoting the public collections in its charge by presenting them outside the spaces of the National Museum of Modern Art/Centre for Industrial Creation (Mnam/Cci)

This ambition makes it the world's leading lender of artworks – more than 2,200 works lent per year in France and some 5,350 works currently placed in other institutions in Paris and in the regions.
Today the Centre Pompidou aims to build a new model of territorial action based on collaborations reimagined with regional partners.
It contributes its works, its expertise and the support of its curators to present its collection, sometimes conducting artistic education and mediation projects and presenting shows and lectures.

For young audiences

The Centre Pompidou places great importance on young audiences and encourages their awareness of modern and contemporary creation through three specially dedicated spaces: the Children’s Workshop and La Fabrique, the Galerie des Enfants and Studio 13/16. A dedicated programme designed to capture and hold the attention of young audiences transmits key concepts and forges a relationship with art and creation from the earliest age.

The Centre Pompidou exports this know-how by proposing travelling exhibitions and workshops that can be set up in a variety of environments. Whatever the domain explored, each proposal is based on everyday experience and a sensory approach in order to develop children's awareness and facilitate encounters with today's creations.
Find out more about some of these initiatives below.

La Fabrique Mobile, nomadic workshops by the Centre Pompidou

Create, invent, test, discuss and produce are the driving actions of La Fabrique Mobile, a simple set-up which invites children from 3 to 10 years to take part in workshops designed by artists. An electric van, in the Centre Pompidou colours and fitted out by Bold Design, houses a modular and functional workshop.

La Fabrique Mobile comes to children in their neighbourhoods and creates optimal conditions enabling them to explore their creativity and discover various means of artistic production.

Saule et les hooppies

A nomadic musical tour for young audiences, designed by matali crasset

Saule et les hooppies is a unique installation which allows children and their parents to experience an original artistic event in which they participate, together, in a musical tour. Designer matali crasset came up with this device to enable everyone to play a key role in the show, by turning the merry-go-rounds which compose the installation, bringing life to its elements and creating a musical tour together. Saule et les hooppies, a platform for expression in the form of an amazing tree, advocates a revival of the group effort. It is brought to life through a pedal system, activated by participants’ energy. The main plateau comes alive to a musical in which everyone sings.

Saule et les hooppies was designed to travel around France. This musical tour journeys from city to city to bring families or school groups a participative and immersive experience. The aim of this project is to create footholds for the Centre Pompidou in the areas hosting the event. The presence of Saule et les hooppies provides an opportunity to lead a variety of mediation and art initiation actions (workshops for young audiences, festive events or exhibitions of works, etc.) in association with local structures.

Studio 13/16 in junior high school

Since its creation, Studio 13/16, the space devoted to 13 to 16-year-olds at the Centre Pompidou, has served as a meeting point for youth and leisure organisations, such as youth and cultural centres, leisure centres and social centres.

In 2014, with a view to meeting teenagers in their schools, Studio 13/16 designed the Studio 13/16 junior high school operation. Its aim is to meet a local public in the heart of the city’s districts and surrounding suburbs, and trigger teenagers’ interest in the players of contemporary creation. The project offers a week of workshops involving pupils’ participation. During the lunch break, from Monday to Friday, these operations take place in the school yard, with performances, workshops or concerts, etc. In the afternoon, classes take turns to participate in workshops designed around a selection of works from the Centre Pompidou’s contemporary collection.

These actions help to alter the atmosphere of the school for a week, and to bring teachers and pupils together around creative activities in a spirit of openness to artistic production.

Studio 13/16 Tour

The Studio 13/16 Tour is a nomadic structure designed by Mathieu Lehanneur (designer at Studio 13/16 and the Children's Workshop at the Centre Pompidou), to host workshops for teenagers.

The aim is to share the know-how and concepts of Studio 13/16 with teenagers outside of the museum institution, in shopping centres, thus going to meet them in their ‘territory’. These free workshops, led by Centre Pompidou presenters, invite teenagers to discover techniques, such as screen printing, which reflect the wealth of the Centre Pompidou collection.

The Studio 13/16 Tour has visited several shopping centres, in particular Rosny II (Rosny-sous-Bois).
